The Friends of the National Railway Museum have taken a significant step towards creating greater awareness of the contents of NAROH ( National Archive of Railway Oral History) . Audio excerpts from five of the six hundred interviews held in the library of the National Railway Museum at York can now be listened to on the NRM website or direct from this page by clicking on any of the five interviewees below. Betty Spiller Listen to recollections of Betty Spiller who joined the male dominated world of railway operating as a young girl just before World War Two . Although her career on the Somerset and Dorset Railway was short, her experiences are a fascinating insight of her early life and responsibilities. Arthur William Gilbert Listen to recollections of Arthur William Gilbert, a railwayman for over 50 years. Born in Walthamstow, London in 1921, Arthur's career took him from working with horses to guard duty on Britain's first tilting train. Dorothy Crawford Listen to recollections of Dorothy Crawford, whose working life was in hotels operated by the Railway Companies. Harry Whitehead Listen to recollections of Harry Whitehead, who joined the army in 1938 but then went to work for the LMS when he was demobilised in 1946. An active member of ASLEF he later became Mayor of Warrington. Dr Alan Wicken Listen to recollections of Dr Alan Wicken, who graduated with an honours degree in Aero Engineering and joined British Rail to research work on high speed passenger vehicles which subsequently became known as the Advanced Passenger Train (APT).
